When the digital lock lets you down

Flat batteries
Most locks warn for weeks before they die. If it is dead, emergency power through the terminal under the keypad usually opens it.
PIN or fingerprint lockout
Too many wrong attempts, a reset that went wrong, or a fingerprint reader that no longer reads.
Jammed motor or mortise
The lock sounds like it opens but the bolt stays out. Usually the mortise or motor needs repair or replacement.
Rain and humidity damage
Gate locks and locks facing the corridor take weather. Moisture inside the unit is a common cause of erratic behaviour.

Try this before you call
- Check for a low-battery warning the last few times you used it. If there was one, it is almost certainly the battery.
- Find the emergency power terminal. On many locks it is under the keypad cover or at the bottom of the outside unit. Your manual shows where and which battery it takes.
- Use the mechanical key if your lock has one. Many digital locks hide a key cylinder behind a cover.
- Do not force the handle. Forcing a jammed lock can break the mortise and turn a repair into a replacement.

How often should I change digital lock batteries?
Change them as soon as the low-battery warning appears. Many owners change them on a fixed schedule so the lock never reaches empty.
